Therapeutic iNeo Lounge Chair –  2019

iNeo came to us with an idea of a one-of-a-kind lounge chair. We teamed up to develop a statement piece with a difference. The motorized chair re-distributes body weight with a parabolic path of motion and customized programs. Movements are designed to stimulate blood flow, circulation, and recovery using principles of physical therapy. These benefit a wide range of users, from the elderly to those with diabetes, users recovering from surgery, and athletes. It’s also just really darn comfortable.

We started with a body position profile supported by ergonomics data. iNeo also had a target range of motion and an aim for a modern “floating” aesthetic. These were key constraints that informed the design phase to follow.

Ideation

With a general idea of the mechanical characteristics that initial constraints defined, we focused our design explorations on creating a streamlined structure and enhanced features.

Engineering

The base of the chair creates a stable platform throughout the range of motion. It also houses the mechanical components that drive the movement. We engineered the assembly to efficiently conceal the means behind the magic and to do so in a manufacturable and economic fashion.

The articulating table was another engineering challenge. The table had to accommodate multiple positions and a high load requirement, all using only a single support arm. We developed a compact solution using a rotating hub with a spring-loaded lockpin knob.

Prototypes

Working directly with the prospective manufacturer, we coordinated the creation of several prototypes. These included initial proof of concept for testing human factors and frame loading, all the way to final pre-production builds.

 Color, Material, Finish

We selected premium materials for the chair to yield a high-end presence in the home or office. Teak wood touch points and top grain black leather are warm and invite touch and inspire relaxation. For the steel frame we selected a charcoal gunmetal finish to compliment the rich tones of the natural materials.

In Another World
